One of the most outstanding sitarists of the globe today, Miss Mita Nag is the daughter and disciple of sitar maestro Pandit Manilal Nag of Kolkata and grand daughter of Sangeetacharya Gokul Nag of the Vishnupur School of Music. The Nag family of sitarists have a six generations of lineage rooted in the town of Bankura in WestBengal since the days of Ramshankar Bhattacharya, one of the earliest musicians of this gharana. Mita’s initiation into sitar playing under her mother at the age of four and a half years was persuaded by her grandfather, Gokul Chandra, and the seeds of the early years coruscated into musical maturity under the sole tutelage of her Guru and dad, Manilal.

There has been no single break in her musical progress, no looking back since those early years of her initiation. She appears limited on stage, the rich exuberance of her style, matched with a discernable sweetness emanating from the rich texture of her instrument, carved by Late Hiren Roy of Kolkata, receives applause from her innumerable admirers everywhere. She believes in tradition blended with innovation and assimilation, picking and choosing the most coveted, of others. A Masters and M. Phil in English Literature from the University of Kolkata, Mita pursues her academic side parallel with sitar, teaching both English language and the language of music to her dear disciples.
